Genuine one to one tutoring for your child

Information About Brainworks

Since 1995 we have helped to develop the potential of students aspiring to reach various goals, including improving their understanding of the school curriculum and preparing for competitive scholarship and selective school examinations. Our experience at helping a large number of students for over 24 years enables us to provide accurate assessment of their abilities and needs. The high quality content and program structure has enabled many students over that time to successfully reach their goals toward scholarship or selective entry. Many more students have also reaped the benefit of our method of tuition propelling their learning at school.

Exams

Format

The format of scholarship and selective school exams can differ between test providers and year level, however there are common elements requiring students to have a strong grasp of skills and higher order thinking. Please note that independent testing services can make minor changes to exam format from year to year.

Exams
Examinations broadly include mathematics and English but can vary in their format. Some examinations tend towards problem solving in mathematics, others split the mathematics into reasoning and mathematical skills. Some examinations include humanities type comprehension questions, that is interpretation of tables, diagrams, poetry as well as inferential reading whilst others have reading comprehension and reasoning with respect to language. Essays are part of the English component and may include one or two essays. Essays required are usually creative and opinion pieces. Some examinations also include abstract reasoning.

Fees

In all of our programs each of our students works through a framework that is individualised according to their need. Students to teacher ratio is low and therefore teachers have the time to teach one to one, (a maximum of 6 students per teacher ensures individual attention), discuss skills and guide students during their learning. All student work is corrected with great emphasis on method and process. Assessment of their work is constantly recorded and reviewed for appropriate action. Our aim is to provide challenge to students of all abilities.

FAQ

We prepare students for scholarship and selective school exams in modules. A module is a course of 8 sessions, usually 1 and a half hours, once per week. Students study the subjects of the exams including practice exams to develop strategy. At the end of the module we conduct a practice exam. From all of the course information and the exam we provide you with feedback regarding the likelihood of success and how best to use any further preparation, if required. There is a second module/part module that can be completed.

We aim to do 3 things:

  1. Develop skills across exam subjects
  2. Provide familiarity of questions and format
  3. Develop exam strategy

Depending upon when you plan to sit an exam, preparation can begin at any time because we teach to individuals with a maximum of 6 students per teacher, not to classes. Most schools sit in February and so term 3 can be an appropriate time to begin, but some sit in October or November and so term 2 may be more appropriate.

On occasion students may be able to complete an accelerated module (2 sessions at a time – 3 hours depending on the venue).

Yes. All of our students work through a framework for their exam that covers all subjects. However because we teach to individuals, not classes, we can individualise the content according to student needs. Additionally teachers work closely with each student providing appropriate teaching and guidance across all subjects.
Our Foundation program is based on the Australian School Standards curriculum. Students from year 2 to 10 can study maths or English or both. All Foundation students are tested using diagnostic tests that specifically determine any gaps that may exist. Then a program is developed to 'fill in the gaps' and for the student to progress. The Foundation program can be used to remediate or advance students.
The  number can vary however we have a maximum of 6 students per teacher so that every student receives attention. That is, we don't have classes, we teach to individual students. We use a program guide to ensure that every student's work is taught, corrected and explained.
Contact your nearest venue and complete the enrolment over the phone with the venue manager. They will discuss your child's needs with you and provide advice.
