Melbourne High Exam

Posted 20 November 2013 by John Grundy (Online Learning News)

60 Questions

One of the challenges of the test is the number of questions in each component. For example, the maths test has 60 questions with a half hour time limit. You have to move quickly but don't rush and get into the habit of guessing. Some of the questions, but not many, are from year 9 & 10. If you don't know them, best to have an educated guess and move on. Remember, you technically have 30 seconds per question so you don't want to spend 3 minutes on one question.

Sample Test

There is a sample test to download in pdf format from the Department of Education website. It has been available for several years. The tests that can be downloaded include maths, numerical and verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. As I mentioned above, the maths test has some questions from year 9 and 10. Some of them are relatively easy to answer, such as reciprocal questions. Others are more difficult. The penultimate (second last) question for example, depending on how you go about answering it, can depend upon a knowledge of Pythagoras and algebra. It can take some time. However the best way to answer it, and quickest, is to substitute each alternative to come up with values for the length of the sides of the triangle, and then substitute them into Pythagoras' formula. Alternative B works because 8 times itself + 6 times itself = 10 times itself.
