Numerical Reasoning

Posted 12 February 2015 by John Grundy (Edutest Selective School Exams)

Numerical reasoning is one of the subjects in selective entry exams. That is the selective entry exam for the group of schools including Melbourne, MacRob, Nossal and Cory Highs. It is also a subject in the John Monash Science School exam.
What method can you use to solve this type of problem?

All columns will have the same pattern. All rows will have the same pattern, but not necessarily the same as the columns. In order to find the pattern think of this. How many times is 10 greater than 2. If you answered 8 you have answered how much greater. 10 divided by 2 will give you 5 times greater.

How many times is 240 greater than 75? 240 divided by 75. That equals 3 and one fifth. The square behind the arrow on the right should equal 15, half of 30. Therefore X will equal 3 and one fifth times 15.

You can check the row pattern to make sure that you are correct.
