Format for Melbourne High School, MacRobertson High, Nossal High & Cory High

Entrance to Melbourne High and MacRobertson Girls High, in addition to the new selective schools of Nossal High (Berwick) and Cory High (Wyndham) begins at year 9. Entrance requires the completion of an examination that has had basically the same format for a number of years. Approximately 2800 to 3000 students sit the examination each year during year 8. The numbers of students accepted at year 9 varies from school to school.

Melbourne High School continues to maintain its standing as one of the finest schools in Australia. The school continues to perform at the top of VCE results. About 320 students are accepted at year 9.

MacRobertson High also continues to consistently perform at the top of VCE results. About 220 students are accepted at year 9.

Nossal High will take about 200 students in its second year of enrolment in 2011.

Cory High will take about 200 students in its first year of enrolment in 2011.

Selection
At least 95% of places are allocated according to the aggregate score from the examination, though 10% of the 95% are also able to apply on the grounds of equity.  A student must reach an acceptable standard in all areas of the examination.

5% Rule
The five percent rule provides that a maximum number of students admitted to the schools, from any one school, is not greater than five percent of the school\'s year 8 enrolment. Many schools will have many students attempting the test, so the 5% rule will impact on students who are high academic performers.

Up to 5% of places for entry are at the discretion of the principal, but students must have an aggregate examination score no lower than 5 marks below the cut-off score.

Entry is also available at later years involving the combination of an examination and other student ability, but is subject to change and varies between Melbourne High and MacRobertson Girls\' High.

The four achievement tests are maths, reading comprehension and two writing tasks.

Reading Comprehension: Multiple choice questions of reading comprehension requiring students to interpret meaning and sentence correction. Duration is 30 minutes to answer 50 questions.

Mathematics: Multiple choice questions including mathematical process and problem solving. Duration is 30 minutes to answer 60 questions.

Creative Writing
