At Brainworks, we offer a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for the John Monash Science School entrance exam—and the interview, when required. Brainworks has over 27 years of experience in preparing students for specific entrance exams including the John Monash Science School Selective entry exam.
Our JMSS exam preparation is structured into modules. Each module consists of 8 weekly sessions, typically lasting 1.5 hours. At the end of the module, students complete a full practice exam. Throughout the course, students focus on the key exam subjects while developing effective test-taking strategies.
There are four distinct modules available for JMSS exam preparation, each progressively challenging and building on the last. As students advance through the program, our experienced tutors can closely monitor their progress, identify any learning needs or challenges and address any gaps in knowledge.
JMSS Entrance Information Workshop
What do you need to know now to enhance your successful selection for JMSS? From July to January Brainworks conducts information session workshops so that parents and students can become familiar with the selection process. The first is scheduled for the 3rd July 2025.
JMSS Introductory Module- An interest in science is important for a student's application and if you have an interest in science it is ideal to begin with this module. This is completed in Term 3.
JMSS Module 1 – It is recommended that you begin during term 4 if not earlier.
JMSS Module 2 – Building on previous learning, this module further challenges students and equips them with advanced skills to tackle the JMSS exam. It is typically completed in Term 1 of the exam year.
JMSS Module 3 – The final stage of our JMSS preparation pathway, this module further sharpens students' skills and reinforces their knowledge in the lead-up to the exam in June.
At Brainworks, ongoing feedback is an essential part of each module to support student growth. If additional feedback is requested, we’re always happy to provide it at any time.
We aim to do 3 things:
Preparation can begin at any time during the term because we teach to individuals with a maximum of 6 students per teacher, not to classes.
For the JMSS exam we study maths, numerical reasoning and science. Science includes essays of various types, science reasoning and scientific experiments and scenarios.
The selective entry program for John Monash Science School is currently available at Burwood East and select venues such as Balwyn, Doncaster, Footscray, West Sunshine, Altona, Point Cook, Tarneit and McKinnon.
Workshops are also conducted at certain times throughout the year to assist students and parents. For example:
Other Workshops
1. Science is a practical subject. Some concepts become much clearer to students using demonstrations and experiments. During the content workshops student thinking is challenged through questioning and discussion. Content workshops include chemistry/biology and physics/energy.
2. Reasoning workshops which are offered for free.
3. Interview workshops which will be available during July & August.
Congratulations to all of our 2022 JMSS students who achieved exam and interview success.
'On behalf of Nicholas & myself we would like to thank you for your guidance, teaching & support you showed Nicholas in preparation for the JMSS entry process. Nicholas is excited to have been offered a place for year 10 in 2023. He could not have done it without you .Thanks you so much. Tina'
Congratulations to all of our 2023 JMSS students who achieved exam success.
Zac has really appreciated and enjoyed the tutoring at Brainworks. It has made a real difference in his chances of gaining admission into JMSS. He has not just been prepared for entrance exams, but also that he has learned subject matter and thinking skills that will benefit him throughout VCE and life, regardless of school. Hans
Congratulations to all of our 2024 JMSS students and their exam success.
I just wanted to say a thank you for the help you gave me during my training to join John Monash Science School. I have luckily been granted admission to the school and I wanted to recognise the impact you and your tutoring school had on me. I think the unique style which you use to run Brainworks really helped me prepare for the admission process. I am really looking forward to joining my new school next year. Thanks again for everything - I really appreciate it. Toby
My name is Rachel Hartono, and I was one of your students last year. Sorry I completely delayed telling you that I got into John Monash Science School. You probably don't remember me but I took the test and I was lacking in many areas except for I think Numerical Reasoning. You also gave me a reality check and said it was very unlikely but showed me the card one of your students gave you that also got into JMSS. So I am happy to say that I have made it and it has been something God has blessed me with.I wanted to also say thankyou for your wonderful help and the tutors that helped me understand difficult concepts.
